As part of a longitudinal study of 340 clergy ordained in the Church of England and the Church in Wales in 1994, a 30-item modified form of the Maslach Burnout Inventory was completed in year 7 of their ministry, togehterwith a question about the frequency of thoughts about leaving the ministry. The data demonstrated that higher levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and lack of personal accomplishment correlated with frequency of considering leaving the ministry.
